Ladies and Gentlemen...The Spike Direction Effect!
I've finally got the boys on a FAWM demo! We had a rehearsal yesterday and played with a few riffs. This was one that was inspired by Blake bashing on the drums in a style that I later realised was a bit 'New Rose'. This was our second run through, with dropped notes, lost sticks and all included. I woke up this morning and listened back to what we'd recorded, and wrote and recorded these vocals to go with it, a true story of the second time my first band almost broke up, I've previously been embarrassed of the 'sprechgesang' thing I do, but I leaned into it here, trying to sound like Rob Lloyd from The Nightingales.
there's a couple more riffs in the bank, and Blake also laid down a few drum tracks for me to noodle over so you haven't heard the last of these guys, they're much better players than me, so enjoy!
Lyrics
It wasn’t the worst gig we’d done but it was up there The first one back after Jim had left We were nervous and forgot our parts But it didn’t matter because there was no fucker there So straight after Dave headed off and I thought the band was done But a few minutes into the very next set My phone rang and this is what it said
SOS SOS SOS SOS Save me lads, I’ve had a puncture And I can’t change a tire Im at Queenborough Corner SOS SOS
We turned and burned without saying a word Piled in the car In the pouring rain The Ivy pub sheerness, We never saw it again We found Dave somewhere out there And 4 brains worked out how to fit a spare
SOS SOS SOS SOS Save me lads, I’ve had a puncture And I can’t change a tire I'm at Queenborough Corner SOS SOS
I think that triumph in adversity Saved the band for a year or two We carried on playing and got quite good Until it turned out the bass player was a nonce.

Cool rhythm, those drums are killer. The grit is strong and lovely! I'm digging the live feel, too.
Ah live drums, makes my soul happy! Real fun to listen to, cools riffs and energy.
Oh man, this is such an awesome flashback to my days of getting the college band together and just jamming out! Love the integration of the morse code. Awesome intensity and a rawkus punky good time. It has a real Iggy vibe and swagger. You guys are winning FAWM already.
Noisemax!!! Like it. A Lot. My own first song has loads of mistakes and dodginess. Better to just DO IT than take a week (been there). Keep on punking !!!
Hey, Jim from the song here. Myself and Ebony really enjoyed that. I hope if you ever properly record it that you literally just stop on that last word HAHAHA
Yeah that's the plan! I'm also pleased with using the bit where the song almost totally fell apart in the middle for a little skit recreating 4 guys changing a tire.
got some good punky stuff going on here. i like the storytelling nature of the lyrics. its also relatable because, a lot of people dont know how to change a tyre !
Hey, another SOS - nice! I think you also described most of my gigs. What a great story about trauma bonding with the rawness to match the told tale as well. Noncy bass players indeed!
This got my blood rolling this morning - always ready for a true story, in song and... F'n hilarious ending
Loving the energy in this and such a lovely contrast with the vocal delivery. Good start to FAWM 26!
yeah surfy punk! got that great live feel which actually isnt easy to capture on audio along - well played. all sorts of influences in here , even has a britpop parklife feel and a bit 999 nice one
My neighbours are listening to this one too! Mind you, they have no choice. It demands to be played LOUD. I love the attitude and energy in this one. It kicks arse!
Beautifully chaotic. Chaotically beautiful. Big up the Sheerness massive etc.
Ah hello! I was just listening to yours! hope you have a good feb mate x
Punky, surfy, poetic, and really cool. The riff keeps things moving during the spoken parts nicely. Well done. Love the SOS beeps and glad you got the band involved!
I think this is a very realistic take on how fragile a band can be and how adversity can bring people together. All neatly packed and wrapped up in a clever and catchy punk song. That’s brilliant.
It’s pieces like this that really make FAWN special every year. You rock dude and your track is excellent.
