Train Dreams

Liner Notes

I saw a trailer for the film “Train Dreams”. Decided to watch it and base a song on it. Some of the lyrics refer to the scene where the protagonist explains his loss with a stranger, and his experiences of hearing his wife and daughter’s voices in the forest.

Recorded on a second hand Tascam DP008 (with sticky buttons!) using live takes of acoustic instruments and other sounds. No editing or AI involved.

Lyrics

The whistle calling out The sound won't settle down on here Smoke fills the skies while smothering all that I know Dark clouds overshadowing our home

Their voices calling out I won't turn around while I can hear them

Leaves weave, breathing shallow sighs and gentle moans Trees watch me walking under them alone

Their voices calling out I still won't turn around while I can hear

The sound samples and acoustic playing work so, so well here. The deep, sprawling melancholy of the lyrics and concept are communicated instantly from the first note of the music, and all the added atmosphere makes me feel like these are my own memories coming back to me in song form. Really cool stuff.

I love the guitar very methodically guiding the melody through the gentle bends and curves. Your voice surprised me. You have an unexpected cadence which is perfect for this type of music. What a lovely song!

I rarely get comments on my voice so I really appreciate that. Thanks for listening!

This song should be used in the movie where the main character is staring off into the yonder with flashbacks of memories with his wife and daughter. It has that sad western vibe with the harmonica. Excellent song.

oh my goodness those guitar flourishes are so beautiful... the harmonica adds so much to it, too. this makes me want to practice to improve more at guitar! great work!!

Wow thanks! Very flattering remark on the guitar! I’m pretty basic ‘less is more’ style so that’s lovely to read!

OMG! I also wrote a tune after I watched this movie, it was so moving. Love the production on this, it feels so right.

Chilling! I love the melancholy melody, and I forgot to actually listen to the words and had to read them after, but train dreams.... yeah, I get it. :) Very emotional song, well done!

I love the tone and mood you crafted here. The sounds in the background caught me off guard at first, and I thought my kid was calling me. Very effective. Love it.

Thank you. I could ‘hear’ those sounds when I played it back so used the closest I could find to what was in my head.

Masterly done! all the sounds add pieces of the puzzle to deliver a very fine song! A terrific song full of emotion!

Thank you. I quite enjoyed adding in the sounds. I just heard them in my head listening to the track and added them in with a bit of trial and error. Embracing imperfection!

Sounds like a more folky Steven Wilson. I don't know the film so I'm trying to parse the mean out of context, but it seems a bit like the Train is a dark intrusion on the beauty of nature, a valid reading, but I do love a train! 😀 Beautiful song to begin with! nice one x

Thanks! What an interesting take on it!

Love the atmosphere. Short but vivid lyrics, given time to sink in. Beautiful. If the film is as good as Denis Johnson's book it's definitely one to watch.

Thank you. I decided to give song writing a fresh try and the trailer made the film / book look like a worthy subject to start with.
