Deep Freeze

Liner Notes
Starting out the challenge really wanting to focus on just the songwriting process, so that means low to no technology for me. It's a noisy take I recorded on the voice memo app of my iPhone, so sorry for all the clicking and clacking!
Lyrics
The city is quiet, the sidewalks sleep Under layers of ice and snow The sky that is blue doesn’t tell of the cold Burrowing deep in my bones
I heard Brigid’s coming, soft, in our sleep So I leave a ribbon outside Oh, bless us with balms for the aches that are haunting Our wandering, wondering minds
Baby, it’s a deep freeze Keep your hearth fires burning The wheel of the year isn’t turning just yet Baby, it’s a deep freeze Your heart’s not yet thawing But something is clawing its way back in Under your skin Life is stirring Again
The pipes, they’re all frozen, the water won’t flow So I pull the covers back on Reach for another to borrow some strength For nights that are far too long
I hear birds that sing, even on barren trees That lost all their green long ago It’s hard to imagine a spring that could come When I am so deep in the throes

What an ache in that first verse. Dang, such imagery and emotion. And your vocal delivers it so damn well. And that chorus, soars just enough over the hurt that it makes me feel better. I absolutely love the burning/turning and thawing/clawing rhymes that aren't quite at the end of the second lines. Perfect.
This is a fantastic demo! So much talent. The lyrics paint a picture in my mind between the cold outside and the relationship. Lovely.
Rachel, your deep freeze is like a warm hug.
Aw thanks friend!
Bless us with balms with the aches that are haunting...I love that. Happy FAWM Rachel Eve!
Thanks and happy FAWM to you!
I hear a lot of Natalie Merchant in this (and that, for me, is a huge compliment)! Such a beautiful melody, and your vocals are just fantastic. The second half of that chorus is really hitting me today. Gorgeous!
Thank you Dave! Happy FAWM!
Just... WOW!!! How can you make a simple iphone recording sound so very EXCELLENT!!!??? What a voice! I was literally mesmerized. The lyrics perfectly describe current conditions here in Cleveland!! LOL!! I loved these lyrics too. And that melody is beautiful and memorable. I'm in awe!!
Aw thanks so much!!
Your voice is enchanting. I want you to sing with me - in that spirit, I'm now motivated to write and record something for that possibility.
Thank you! Yes, let me know, I’m happy to collaborate!
Beautiful song Rachel as ever. Reminding me that simple arrangements are often the best. Some lovely lyrics. Haunting our Wandering wondering minds and the parallel between freezing weather and human contact. Hope you get change to expand it. Let me know if I could add anything as a collaboration.
Thank you Nigel!
My first listen of FAWM this year, and I'm so glad I got the chance to hear this. I'm listening while looking out at a fresh dusting of snow and the third consecutive week of sub-freezing temps. Perfectly captured by your piece: lyrics, tone, that gorgeous melody. I love the refrain of "the wheel of the year...," because its such a fitting image - like the very mechanisms of time and change can themselves be frozen.
Thank you so much! We are also experiencing an unusually long stretch of brutal cold so that was definitely inspiration!
Pretty voice 😍 Lovely melodies!
When the chorus came in, it felt natural and it really elevates the song and takes the listener exactly where you are. Lyricism is perfectly colorful for a beautiful chord progression like this. Well done 👏🏻
Thanks so much!
Love that hook melody! This is a gem!
