Skirmish: What I did on Summer Brea... (@jlampson)Liner Notes
I was thinking this would be an easy assignment, but I had to look through my photo library for clues. One highlight was a trip to Colorado, where I re-united with my friends from the DNR Band to play at the Colisco Beer Garden in Frisco. After the original band broke up in the '80s, we made it a tradition to get together once a year and play a gig in someone's hometown. Despite a brief shower (not great at an outdoor gig...) it went pretty well for a bunch of aging boomers. Especially since we had an age-appropriate audience. Just posting the lyrics for now to meet skirmish deadline, but music will follow. (Now added...once I remembered where that "edit" button was hiding!)
Lyrics
WHAT I DID ON SUMMER BREAK (c) 2026 raspberry33 Verse 1: It’s become a tradition with my old band-mates To choose a location and settle on dates A reunion gig, each year a different place Cause it’s such a rush to play out live.
This year it was Keystone’s turn to host So, we came to Colorado from both valley and coast We’d only have time for one practice at most But it’s such a rush to play out live.
Chorus: I did a lot of fun things last summer Planted tomatoes and got a good crop There were fireworks, and family quirks But playing out ranks near the top
Verse 2: No grand parade, just a chance to perform Playin’ outdoors to a beer-drinking throng Well, maybe more a modest, but very cool crowd We were mostly in tune, and not too loud
Back in the day, we headlined three dozen shows More years ago than I want to disclose I think by now there’s been more reunion gigs Because it’s such a rush to play out live
Prechorus: Four baby-boomers long past their prime Getting together for quality time The old songs keep paying dividends There’s magic playing with old friends
Chorus: I did a lot of fun things last summer Planted tomatoes and got a good crop There were fireworks, and family quirks But playing out ranks near the top
Outro: Another last hurrah – good seeing my old band-mates It’s our last hurrah – until next year!

Fun song to listen to. Made me smile and feel warm. Lovely instrumentation and a wonderful vocal. I can picture your song in a musical. Beautiful descriptions. Love the atmosphere. I take it you didn't come to UK. Maybe another time.
I like the throwback feel of the music, it really fits the idea of getting the band back together! Nice organ too. Enjoyed the listen!
This one really got that meet old school friends feeling
This is so adorable. I appreciate how homey the chorus is in contrast with the rest of your lyrics about getting out to do your reunion shows. Especially love the detail of how there's probably more reunion shows now! Really would be great for you to play this song during one of those. 😛
i like the idea here, as just about any old boomer who is still in touch with former bandmates has had similar experiences. some of those bands havent even broken up. at least three seattle bands i know of have stayed together for over 50 years and still add new material. also new fans. the old ones are still faithful and come out to shows and so do their children and sometimes grandchildren. im looking forard to hearing the song with music, so will save further comments until then.
Thanks, Bill. The music is now posted! The DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) band dates back over 40 years at this point, and we're still adding new material. We've tried to do a reunion gig every year since we broke up in the '80's, and at this point have played post-breakup gigs in Cleveland, Boston, Kansas City, Chicago, John's Island SC, Peoria, Jackson TN, Dunedin FL, Springfield MA, and Frisco/Keystone CO to name a few. It's been wild watching a bunch of then-single guys mostly getting married, having kids and in some cases grandkids. And with about a dozen band members (albeit 5 at any given time), we've had the opportunity to visit and play in some interesting places where folks have scattered over the years. Cheers!
Lots of great lyrical hooks here.
Being older Gen-X that prechorus is hitting hard.
Nice vibe - I can relate to the lyric a lot. I'm not in one of those bands, but am in touch with several guys that I used to play with and we reminisce. I like your voice and the flow of your melody - reminds me a bit of Stan Ridgway.
