Joyce, Rejoice!

Liner Notes

..and we're off the mark.

My algorithms point me to a lot of Ableton 'tricks', the majority of which are obvious, boring, useless, or AI based. However, I got a decent one yesterday that suggested feeding a drumbeat into a vocoder linked to synth, so I did that.

Those who follow me on the socials will know that I like to write short stories from time-to-time. I wrote one called Clairnsh Island last year (read it here: https://substack.com/home/post/p-178263997) and this song is about that.. or at least, it's about the climactic scene. It's fairly vague but it's also a bit of a spoiler if you wanted to read the story first.

Lyrics

a mouth that moves in silence goes down with a bubble pop a body in the swamp it’s a lot a greyhound jogging on the spot

bless your soul, it’s written I’m cynical, but I’m not that dark not that kind of player all bug-eyed the earth has hands but mine are tied

Joyce, rejoice! short-term gain heart-shaped eyes wrapped in cellophane Joyce, your voice, blues the sky a sun absurd and oversized

Joyce, rejoice!

A couple of Muse-y moments standing out for me, and a satisfying progression. The refrain sticks easily into my eternal internal hi-fi. I listened before reading the story. The lyrics were too cryptic to be a spoiler!

Loving the rhythms in this right from the start, and how you hold back with the drums until 1:43, they weren't needed before and it really lifts the song at that moment, then through to the dominating rhythmic synth at the end! Nice subtle harmonies too throughout.

If this were a single you know someone would pick it up for a dance floor remix. And they'd replace your vocals with Marsha Walsh. :-p

Another nugget of solid gold Follett pop!

I know NOTHING about feeding a drumbeat into a vocoder linked but I love the outcome. Now I guess I need to read the short story!

@sph

What a rhythm! Great singing and top production

@owl

Oh that’s an interesting trick! Your vocals sound great on this one, and the sounds in the production are really cool.

[pic]

oh jeez. Right of the mark indeed – grooving indeed, and those effortless-sounding vocals/harmonies!?! As usual, I have no idea how you make 14 of these complete productions happen each Februrary, but I'm glad you do. And deepest condolences re: Ichabod.

The old Drums into a vocoder. Classic!

[pic]

Oh I like that reverb at the beginning! The bass pop in; nice. Nice layering and harmonies. Even a bit of toe tapping. I like the chord progression.

Radiohead this, Keane that. This is Hot Chip is what it is.

Love the bouncy drum synth, and when this kicks in it takes off into the atmosphere with a real joyful feeling. Your vocals get better year on year also.

Wow!!! I‘m happy you created this, such an energetic song. It has a Muse vibe to it and I couldnt resist moving. Great production as always.

RE: RE: Joyce

That synth / vocoder thing has such a nice metallic, lo-fi edge to it and the other softer synths fluttering around it is such a nice contrast. Incredible clear mix as usual, mega ear candy. In summary, I completely agree with bill, it sounds exactly like Keane

@tangle

Love it! This is my first FAWM listen this year. Really interesting lyrics and I'm looking forward to reading the story now.

Those vocal melodic jumps are beautiful. Really struck by the juxtaposition of the long sustained vocal lines against the jittery, punchy accompaniment. Looking forward to hearing more of yours this month Adam!

[pic]

your voice and melodies remind me of keane, a group i knew nothing about when i was assigned to cover their concert..and i was blown away. but back to you. there are some compelling and startling lines here, my favorites being "the earth has hands but mine are tied" and "heart-shaped eyes wrapped in cellophane" and lets not forget the jiggly pop wonderment of that backing music that sets it all a-moving

[pic]

Great groove. Really like how the back half of the song is mostly wordless; makes it a tasty jam.

Big boy start to ‘26

Listened three times but can’t find the words. It’s a chilled out banger.

@thob

Love this, some brilliant lyrics!

[pic]

so cool!! I'm glad you found an Ableton trick that worked its way into this song!

[pic]

This is great Ad. I feel like my algorithm may have fed me that trick recently too! Alas, it works really well here. Vocals angelic as ever with some nice close harmonies. That punchy little synth bass is pretty cool. The build is well judged and satisfying. I’ve no idea what you’re on about but the lyrics read and flow nicely. Nice work my friend.

Vocoder beat is really cool and I like when the actual beat comes in over the top of it at the midpoint when the song opens up. Sequencey synth breakdown at the end is really good as well. The chorus vocal harmonies are neat too, great opener

@mctown

enjoying the sound and the voice...and images....

[pic]

your songs are always a must here! something very radiohead here to my ear! no smart comments just a top class song all round

[pic]

Oooh, I love that synth effect, that's really cool. Beautiful harmonies as always. Big fan of chirpy tunes with downbeat lyrics so this is right up my street. Great start!

[pic]

Hi. This is great. Very catchy and a real bounce to it. The lyrical darkness beneath is really edgy which when juxtaposed leaves me feeling quite uneasy which I am sure is your intention. I could see someone being murdered to this track in a Scandi noir type movie, lol It's really very memorable. My first listen this year and a great one. 😀

Oooh very rejoicey! Resplendent with rejoice! It sounded a bit we found love in a hopeless place when you started it (which obvs is the best song ever written so no problem there) but then you’ve mumbled your them yorkey lyrics all over the top of it and then it just explodes weeeeee! Can’t believe you did this in one day!
