Only Murder
Lyrics
Got called judgmental last week for sharing an opinion I didn't think was radical but I am an American who believes that killing human beings cannot be justified for any reason I'm growing sick with what I see, while so many around me are celebrating death in the streets
Are we going insane Were we ever sound Never thought I'd see the day Public execution came back in style
In the last year of my life I've seen more Images of people being killed than ever before I've become a voyeur to tragedy Scrolling on my phone somehow their final moments play for me I watch from the comfort of my home with forest out the window, family safe and sound inside
Am I going insane I can't turn away Never thought I'd see the day We used to gather before the gallows Now we sit and watch at home
In this way I am not alone, everybody's watching from a distance on their phones While I'm stuck on the horror of each killing, others justify, naming heroes and villains We witness death from different camera angles, turning what we see into fuel for our agendas
We've gone insane Were we ever sound I don't think so No I don't think so
I keep hearing folks sayin' Play stupid games, win stupid prizes Which just means somebody deserved to die NO LIVING THING DESERVES TO DIE I see no justice Only murder

This song punches.
Many words in the lyrics yet they feel stripped down and each cuts. Great work here.
We are attracted to fires. Don’t like them, but find it hard to look away. What is going on in the States is horrific. Have we not learned anything from history. This song hits the mark. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful. I'm a pacifist. An appetite for public hangings, appreciate the gruesome worst. But passively encountering or bearing witness in differently intentional way is not the same thing as the gruesome enjoyment of it and you are not alone. But there is this horrible thing where we've come back from trying not to engage or be embroiled in this desensitisation retraumatising/trauma rehearsal and consumption of poverty , starvation and violence. Particularly if black and brown bodies. Intersectionality applying here too. Who is killed and disappeared. Like Gaza & ICE and the continuing violence was like the backlash from the powers that be for black lives matter, indirectly and unrelated or otherwise. And then theres the bodies we aren't as desensitised to and are taken much more serious. It's an odd position to be be like yes but Say Her Name and Black Lives Matter didn't stop. But nobody deserves to be killed. At least if I think Epstein Ghislaine Trump traffickers and torturers in general don't deserve a lot of grace there's nothing that can mend what they've done. It's still a destructive act. And in general it's not a good instinct we unleash to have a death penalty. There are also miscarriages of justice. But detention can also be inhumane, indefinite detention especially. And then there's issues of cost or profitable exploitation with the prison population as a whole. Many who are and have been vulnerable and misused to get to that point. Nothing is satisfactory really to me in this massive complex area. Lots of different things theoretically. But a great song ❤️✊
I have to admit I came here via the random song after listening to a comedy song about dogs tired of winter ganging up on puxatany Phil, the almost-murder of a marmot! Which I enjoyed & I'm not vegetarian, for ages now. But generally averse to death and killing and cruelty. I don't think anyone who commits a violent crime is in their right mind. The legal definition is different.
