Skirmish: Out of the Loop (@dotsandlines)Liner Notes
This one harks back to my flirtation with gurus and cults as a young man. These supposedly safe communities were often run by the most manipulative swines you could imagine and the cliques in the group dissolved any sense of unity that was supposed to govern us all.
This is for the #finished_it challenge - since the melody was something I'd improvised last year and "La La'd" into my pocket recorder.
It's also for the #neglected12string challenge
INSTRUMENTS: Fender Acoustic 12 String Jumbo Harley Benton Rickenbacker inspired Semi-Acoustic 12 string
Lyrics
INTRO: (Am) (G) (Am)
(Am) I didn't know how (G) far she would (Am) stoop To (C) keep me (G) out of the (Am) loop Oh the lies that she (C) told left me (Em) out in the (Dm) cold And a(Am)part from the (G) rest of the (Am) group
(Dm) When you have trusted and (Am) still been betrayed (Dm) Faith can be so hard to (Am) find (Dm) Who can you count on? Are they (Am) part of a charade? Do you (C) stick to the (G) role you're as(Am)signed?
(Am) We would build a com(G)munity they (Am) said With the (C) aim of (G) reaching god(Am)head Spiritual (C) games and (Em) Indian (Dm) names But their (Am) real aims I (G) sadly mis(Am)read
CHORUS
(Am) I gave my loyalty to (G) her holi(Am)ness But promised (C) peace turned (G) into dis(Am)tress I'd thought that my (C) friend would (Em) help me a(Dm)scend But I was (Am) played like a (G) pawn in (Am) chess
CHORUS

i used to enjoy spending time with cults, but i never joined one.i used to visit the love family in seattle on sundays for the free vegetarian feasts and back massages from the women. i enjoyed playing music with the members who all had virtue names life Fun and Serious. but when its leader, Love israel, invited me to his private room and asked me to write praise songs in honor of him, i fled and never returned. your song makes me feel sorry for those who believed in the guru and signed over all their property and financial assets to him. .
The only good thing that came out of the cults I was vaguely involved with was when my then girlfriend left me for a cult that didn't just follow a guru, but believed that their leader was an actual incarnation of God, like Jesus! This of course led me to my line: "Oh yeah, my girlfriend left me for God... I mean where else can you go after me?" I was quite full of myself back then 😜
This is poignant. I have a friend who is actively involved with exposing cults as a real danger to people, even today. This song certainly captures that feeling. Great!
Like all organised religions (IMHO) cults are about control and power (and cash too, of course). Your friend is doing an important job.
Bam! Nailed it! Nice write - well done!
A very relevant topic always. So sad that they play on the vulnerable. I run at the sniff of cultism , i guess I'm lucky! well written and delivered.
