Liner Notes

#punkinspirit #garage I've always appreciated the DIY ethos of punk, which is great for me since I never learn anything. While I appreciate virtuosity, it frequently doesn't serve the song, in my view. Sometimes you have to be really good to make something really bad, and vice versa. And sometimes punk rockers have a sort of know-nothing hubris that mirrors the know-it-all hubris of some prog rockers, say. All of it goes before the fall. Like everything. (I've been off work and sleeping very little. I need to chill out with this FAWM stuff.)

Lyrics

You’re the needle I’m the haystack Good bands can be bad in ways that Bad bands can’t approach ‘Cause they don’t know The gate is wide The road’s not narrow Regicide only takes one arrow I'll let it fly Though I'm weak I can draw my bow

A haughty spirit goes before the fall Modesty in tow

I’m the needle You’re the haystack Bad bands can be good in ways that Good bands can’t abide What with all they know The gate is wide The road’s not narrow Regicide only takes one arrow I'll let it fly though I neither reap nor sow

A haughty spirit goes before the fall Modesty in tow

You’re the needle I’m the haystack Good bands can be bad in ways that Bad bands can’t approach ‘Cause they don’t know

A haughty spirit goes before the fall Modesty in tow

almost the title of one of my fav songs by Eliot Smith! I like the idea of a haughty spirit. Even with more ability my bands couldn't have been famous, i couldn't think of anything worse than being asked to play the same old tired songs again and again. Plus i still say songwriters are often the worst judges of a songs likely popularity (so ignore everything i say if you like) i often am! I digress, i like this!

Great abstractions, I'm loving songs about comeuppance and hubris - ain't it a sign of our times? Bringing in regicide ups the ante for sure. Really enjoyed this.

I have played in both punk rock bands and progressive rock bands, and on a admittedly very anecdotal basis that most die hard fans of both styles are tedious to talk to, and that bands whose members exclusively listen to their own style of music makes meh music, especially in prog

But I digress, that Regicide line made me crack up, really enjoyed this track, great lyrics

often, the better a band gets the more boring they become. i think the problem is that once you know what you are doing, you get stuck there...afraid to go any further. until you reach a certain plateau of public acception, you are fearless and can do anything because you dont know what you are doing. if i write a song and am sure it is a good song, the chances are it is a bad song, a song i have written many times before. i hope i never reach the point where i am afraid to write anything else. there now, i have put in rambling prose what you have so much more succinctly said in a song.
