You Only Come Down for Food

There is no demo for this song.

Liner Notes

My attempt at the #unseasonal challenge — a Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday song. Luckily, my extended family is not this dysfunctional.

Lyrics-only until I get a chance to sit down with my ukulele.

Lyrics

A camera occasion A holiday feast Where relatives gather, for better or worse If nobody’s happy But everyone eats We’ve honored our family curse

The cushions are granite The bathrooms too few And nobody’s speaking your language Who is the alien here Is it you? Still, everyone understands sandwich

Full plates and mixed tastes on holidays Wishbones break but the wishes stay Nothing’s for sure ‘cept the menu’s planned Sock feet and indoor shoes Which seasonal sweatshirt to choose You think of the seagulls above the sand Who only come down for food You only come down for food

The kitchen is busy With fighting kites All waiting to dash when the winds change Get you a plate, here, I’ll make one, too Talk about leftovers, things that remain

BRIDGE Sweet potato Hot potato Mac and cheese Aunt Someone’s casserole Thank yous and please Pass the time Pass the gravy Pass the collard greens Fight, freeze, or fly? I will always choose pie

Full plates and mixed tastes on holidays Wishbones break but the wishes stay Nothing’s for sure ‘cept the menu’s planned Lace up your indoor shoes Which seasonal sweatshirt to choose You think of the seagulls above the sand Who only come down for food You only come down for food

@cjk

Sometimes all you can hope for is good food. Lol. Love the picture of a family gathering. Definitely fits the prompt.

Hey, thanks! I am honored by the comparison!

this reminds me of a thanksgiving when my mother invited all my friends for dinner, and she got drunk and started to yell at everyone, "You only came here for the food." you captured that memory for me.

Ah, yes! I bet a number of hosts have hit that point! 🙂

I think every family has at least a bit of this dysfunction. You capture the emotional details so well! Love this "You think of the seagulls above the sand / Who only come down for food..."

I think that was one of the first line pairs I wrote. Thanks for posting and commenting!
