To Hope / An die Zuversicht

by @mahtowin

There is no demo for this song.

Liner Notes

I stumbled into that quote from Kafka a few weeks ago. And from there I developed the text. Again about confidence and hope!

Again to be set free for any kind of collab!

Lyrics

(1) Franz Kafka

To Hope

"Happiness is greatest when it is smallest" (1) you say, and fold my courage small enough for me to carry.

You speak softly.

Not loudly like hope, which promises.

But like someone dear, who sits beside me and whispers:

We can stay!

In your eyes there is no today, but a tomorrow that can breathe.

You are a window in the early day!

Yet without an answer, but open!

You are not a loud hope!

Stay with me! Stay as a stance in my movement! In the midst of trembling, as a quiet yes, you are there and remind me that I can stay!

(1) Franz Kafka

Beautiful poetic lyrics! May the whole world be safe and happy. I wish I knew German.. im sure some nuances are lost in translation.

🙏 thank you, Bill!

I read the English first, and then I was able to apply some of my college German (it's been 40 years!). Both sets of words are beautiful and powerful. And I'm so glad you liked our collab!

Dankeschön! I really like our song and I‘m very glad being part of a protest song!

@ayais

So great. Well done. Love soft happiness and loud hope.

I don't want to analyze this. Let me just say that I love it and feel that I could meditate on some of the phrases for a long time. A stance in my movement--yes

@janeg

A fortunate stumble indeed! And this one I could mostly translate, which gives me hope.

Wonderful - promise me you'll use the German for PM! Love the Kafka quote and the folding up of courage and "your are a window ... open." Very poetic!

I wish I knew enough German to read this in the original language you worked with. The English is lovely. The idea of folding up your courage so that you can carry it is just sigh wonderful. Musically, I could envision it sounding a bit like an art song by Schumann, similar in feel to 'Du Ring an meinen finger'

Thanks 🙏! If you like to just use the English version and put it to music! I would be glad!

This works so nicely simply as a set of lyrics / a poem; it tells such a tender story, is full of such longing and, yes, hope. Absolutely lovely. I think these lyrics require a deft touch and gracefulness that I lack, but am intrigued to hear a version that handles these words with the sensitivity and compassion they deserve.

Thank you! 🙏

the last 4 lines sound like a chorus and the choice of words is just superb here, all 4 lines. Really needs a tune now and you you rocking!

@jinx

Oh man this is gorgeous, hits hard right from those first few lines. And all your lyrics... I don't know if it's because I'm a non-native speaker, but I'm always reading layers of meaning into German poetry and lyrics (whether the author necessarily intended them or not). For instance here "sprechen" vs. "versprechen", or "lautes Hoffen" which also for some reason creates a distant echo of "lauter Hoffen" in my mind, or "Haltung in meiner Bewegung" bringing up for me all the various other meanings connected with "Halt/halten". I don't know if you did all that on purpose, or even thought about those things yourself while writing. But whether you did or not, this is beautiful.

If you want to, bring it to music! In English or German or both! I would be glad!
