Critique welcome on this song: Especially wanting blunt opinions on the mix.
Seems like I spent an age on this today, especially for a simple song. But I kinda like it. A good intro to an album, I'd think.
Things I used: Partial capo (A, D and G strings on the 2nd fret) firefly acoustic guitar short scale squire jaguar bass superlux S241 small diaphragm mic samples for drums.
Lyrics
Welcome to the misfits To those who don't fit in Welcome to the creators To those who look within The doors are always open You're welcome to walk on through We'll raise a glass of this liquid And make a toast to you
Here the moon will shine on everybody We can watch as the shadows learn to dance
Welcome to the strangers Friends we have yet to meet Pull up a chair and join us Go ahead and take a seat Welcome to the outcasts To those with eccentric style Welcome to the introverts Join us for a little while
Here the moon will shine on everybody We can watch as the shadows learn to dance Here we'll wait to see the sun and its rising Here we're free to take another chance

Ahhhh MISFIT here and I feel very welcomed, thank you! The guitar is really pretty on this and I love the lyrics. The mix sounds great to me too!
Really pretty tone on that guitar with the capo and openness. Reminds me a bit of Soul Asylum, especially with your vocals. Sounds great, mix feels balanced. A lovely ode to the oddballs!
Ah, it's us, isn't it! It's about all of us wonderful eccentrics, launching headlong into another mad month! This is a bloody good song. Mix-wise it sounds pretty darn good on my Samsung earbuds. Not that they are great for helping with critques, as then tend to downplay the bass and spike the upper mids. But given that, it really sounds super smooth to me!
Thematically I just love these lyrics. I think a lot of us here can relate to having been misfits at one time/place or another. I love the idea of raising the glass and warmly welcoming anybody coming in. The Americana tinged accompaniment is great too. I’m not a mixologist (yet) but maybe the harmonies up a teensy bit higher? Or not lol
Loving the open sound of the guitar chords and how this is giving me They Might be Giants vibes. The lyrics are so sweet and you're totally singing to my kind of person. I think the mix sounds pretty darn good but I'm also listening on my computer speakers right now so take that for what it is.
The theme of welcoming misfits really speaks to me. You deliver the vocals very poignantly and it carries through. This is sounding really good.
I love the droning open strings that ring through when using partial capos. I'm a sucker for capos. All sorts. I love the sentiment of this song. I would agree that it's a great intro song for an album. Leads right into the obvious option to end the album with a song called Goodbye, or See you Next Time or something like that. I like the concept.
You mentioned mix critiquing. I'm listening on some pretty busted speakers at work (getting a lot of work done 😁) so I don't have the best listening environment at the moment, but with that being said, I think the mix works well. I think the only suggestion would be to bump up the level of the lead vocal, just in the first verse by maybe 1-2 dbs and see if that sits better.
Great tune!
Thank you for the comment and the critique!
Cool song! Great lyrics and nice one overall. Critique as requested: see if you can add or remove something to make chorus a bit more catchy? Maybe also some added variation in 1st vs. 2nd verse?
Mix: I would see if there is something to reduce slightly in 200-400 Hz region. Maybe in guitar, maybe bass, maybe in time-based effects on guitars. Also try doubling the guitars left and right.
Not very educated points, just the ones that came to my mind as you asked.
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.
This is great! I love the line "we can watch as the shadows learn to dance"
Ooh, that transition into the second section with the drums kicking in is sweeeet.
This vocal line is beautiful for harmonies, man, this feels like it could be stunning with three or four singers live with a full band. Really cool!
I'm still learning EQ and Compression, but yeah the mix sounds full.
I can hear every instrument on my phone speakers which is impressive in and of itself the bass and guitar have the smallest bit of clash/mud in the low-mids a small q cut in one or both of those tracks would likely give you a bit more clarity but dude that’s pretty knit-picky it sounds great. Really like your vocals on this one and the guitar sounds golden and lovely
Thank you! I appreciate your ears.
The instrumentation and lyrics work so beautifully together, wonderful tune!
This has a nice tone and a nice vibe.
Well played sir' A great welcoming song! I especially like the attention given to teh misfits =)
Awesome song. Sounds great!
Acoustic guitar sounds super fresh here.
Yep. Definitely a great welcome song. I laughed out loud at the line about a glass of this liquid because at that moment I was scooping liquid out if the stove vent in the first floor kitchen that had poured through the ceiling, walls and cabinets when the faucet handles exploded in the second floor bathroom. It sure was nice to have your reassuring company for the job. Glad you are back!
a fine and welcoming message! and the choice of instrumentation is perfect for this... is that just one track of guitar? (maybe you did a cut and paste doubling it with a little delay? great tone!) Nice vocal harmonies on the chorus, too!
Thanks for the comment, Mike. Just one guitar. The partial capo made a great drone sound. I think I'm gonna play with it a bit more it sounded so good.
It's really nice. The chorus I feel could have the guitar be a bit louder, feels overcome by the vocals. And cool use of the partial capo, I've been wanting to get one of those!
