Polar Vortex

Liner Notes

It's been several weeks now of high temperatures being below freezing, and there's no sign of things warming up any time soon! So obviously, the cold weather is on my mind. So is the fact that intense cold weather does NOT disprove climate change. I just shake my head at the people who can't (or won't) see the bigger picture of what global warming and climate change are doing to our planet!

So what better way to set the record straight than a silly ukulele song? I was inspired by They Might Be Giants and all their songs that explain scientific topics (e.g., Why Does the Sun Shine, aka, The Sun Is a Mass of Incandescent Gas). Like that song, I may have to rewrite this one as I learn more about meteorology, but from what I was able to Google this morning, I think my facts are pretty much correct!

PS - The reference to Jesus being a "real cool dude" is actually a nod-and-wink to a song I wrote last FAWM and released in April called "A Real Cool Dude." You can find it here: https://song.link/s/00jJo6pFxzNtg0QAWTmiM5

Lyrics

Verse 1 There's a mass of cold air that hangs out by the poles, Both North and South, you see. In the northern hemisphere it flows counter-clockwise, From westerly to easterly. Typically, it's held in place by a current, One that's called the jet stream. But if that current weakens, then look out below Cuz that cold air'll haunt your dreams!

Chorus Holy crap, here comes the Polar Vortex. I am so not ready for this. The jet stream buckled, and the Arctic breezes Made us all feel so much colder than Jesus. And he was one real cool dude.

Verse 2 It is wintertime in the US of A now, And some places get a little cold. But they don't expect to get to negative 20 In Fahrenheit - man, that gets old! Oh the news they're calling it a Polar Vortex, Saying it could last a long, long time. So layer up, get your scarfs and your mittens Cuz this weather is fucking unkind!

Chorus

Verse 3 A stable polar vortex is caused by low pressure, Keeping cold air swirling 'round the poles. No high pressure system can get in the way Of its circulating Arctic goals. When that low pressure weakens, it disrupts the jet stream Sending all that cold air down here. So what would have been a typical winter Just laughs and says, "Hold my beer!"

Chorus

Bridge (spoken) Some people see these low temperatures And claim global warming must not be real. If the entire planet was really warming, We'd never have this kind of wind chill. They don't get the fact that climate change Is actually making things worse. Disruptions to the jet stream are more common now Cuz global warming is a real curse. All the extreme weather that we see today, Whether cold or hot or wet or dry Is coming from human-caused climate change, And we can face that, or we may all die!

Last Chorus Holy fuck, another Polar Vortex, We were not ready for this shit. The jet stream buckled, and the Arctic breezes Are making us all feel so much colder than Jesus, And he was one real cool dude. Yes, he was one real cool dude!

This is excellent. I love how you can take on topical subjects with such humor and attitude. Great lyrics abound - love the Jesus line, and the escalation from crap->fuck for the final chorus. Keep warm!

Thanks! Here’s to keeping the humor while we tackle all the subjects!

So creative!! Midwesterner here. I can totally relate. I had to laugh at the lyrics. I think the warmth of the uke and witty lyrics made the temperature rise here in Ohio...even if it is just a little! Well done, Dave!

Too warm to ski this weekend in Tahoe (we believe in warming living here in the fastest warming city in the US), I got a few songs started. I usually associate Uke with Hawaii/warm/tropical/etc, so I like the juxtoposition here! Cute little song :)

I hope you’re able to ski as much as you want to…and that it doesn’t disrupt your FAWM’ing too much!

we are opposite here of course! Very topical now, i guess always! Nicely done

Best rhyme ever - Arctic breezes / colder than Jesus! Holy fuck! Hold my beer! This is hilarious, and also educational. You sure did your research for this one!

This is just delightful and quite educational! Lol’ing throughout, “what would have been a normal winter says hold my beer” haha. Congrats on your first fruits!

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing you and Luke at the house concert…and perhaps at the Perch before that!

An absolute bop! Love the rhythm, not to mention the great lyrics and delivery. A great start to your FAWM project!

Thanks for the comment! It was a fun song to put together!
