Graph Paper
Liner Notes
FAWM 2026 / Song 2 Instrument: plastic soprano ukulele tuned high GCEA
I wrote a draft of the lyrics for this #silly idea while attending my very first IRL filk festival, OVFF, last October! And after experiencing my first in-person filk circles and concerts, I wanted to make it a sing-along song — so I made sure to repeat choruses after more verses than I would typically write. Of course, I wrote this in my songwriting notebook on graph paper pages. That’s what I like!

Lyrics
Graph Paper
Some wordsmiths prefer a blank sheet and some find a typewriter neat Of course there are writers Whose words pour out brighter On napkins or laptops and I think that’s sweet
BUT I only like graph paper My lyrics look gorge in a grid I prefer to opine Inside boxes of lines And to look at them after I did
I’ve gotten some looks, as I write My notebook, to some, looks uptight, But blank makes me cranky And lined, to be frank, means The ideas just do not flow right
NO, I only like graph paper My lyrics look gorge in a grid I prefer to opine Inside boxes of lines And to look at them after I did
I’ve failed as a nerd, I’ve aspired To math levels I’ve not acquired My intellect’s finite But graph paper feels right With pen to it, I get inspired
SO, I only like graph paper My lyrics look gorge in a grid I prefer to opine Inside boxes of lines And to look at them after I did
There’s something so special, so rare About writing dreams inside squares I don’t feel constriction My creative friction Sparks right into fire when it’s there
OH, I only like graph paper My lyrics look gorge in a grid I prefer to opine Inside boxes of lines And to look at them after I did
Please do put me in a box But I won’t toe the line I’ll fit the round peg In the square hole Every time

Grinning through this entire thing. It's so quirky and adorable. Your wordplay is awesome, and so are a lot of these rhymes. And the tune is definitely Celtic-inspired, I recognize that when I hear it. Bright and cheerful and mischievous. It would do very well with a filk audience, I agree.
Thanks so much! Songs like this are definitely fun to play with, and it's so interesting to hear Celtic! I am sure I have many unknown influences.
This is so cute!
Thanks, Stacy!
Wonderful tune and very clever lyrics!
Graph paper is also great for charting chords that you found accidentally, and haven't bothered to figure out what they should be called. I'm using a graph paper notebook, after going through one with the dots (I think that one was a gift.).
Aha! Yes, that would be a good use! Thanks for stopping by the song. 🙂
Haha! Lovely. Funny, self-observational and hummable. Filk? A USA thing?
Thanks! No, filk is an international scene! 😀
Incredibly witty write! You're very clever and creative. Your lovely voice gives off some Celtic vibes. Wishing you another prolific FAWM!
Intriguing! I’ll have to try some Celtic stylings! Thank you so much.
This is lovely! I'm sure many filkers will relate to this :). And join in as appropriate! Although one thing I've noticed with filkers is that they'll join in whether they know the words and tune or not, and I love that.
Ha! That is true and I have been one of those people. 😉
This is so clever and relatable. Nicely done.
Thanks so much. 🙂
OMG this is so CHARMING! I feel you! I ONLY like BLANK PAGES, and HUGE ONES. Like big artist sketch books, or those handbound leather journals the size of ancient medieval grimoires. It's not... HANDY. But I LOVE THEM.
I love this verse: There’s something so special, so rare About writing dreams inside squares I don’t feel constriction My creative friction Sparks right into fire when it’s there
And I love the cranky/frank, means rhyme!
Ah, thank you! It’s nice that you were my first commenter on this one — and I love knowing your notebook style. A few years ago I started a forum thread asking to see people’s notebooks; and that was really fun. Maybe I’ll do it again.
Very cool lyrics. Full of amazing wordplay, I even learned a new word! Opine! never heard that before. The pretty strumming compliments the lyrics without getting in the way.
