03. Scatterbrains
Liner Notes
#Pop #ukulele #nationalukuleleday
Today is National Ukulele Day so I wanted to have this track ready before it's over! I'm not a good player, but each year I try to write a song or two with the uke I have lying around.
Instead of a folksy song, I wanted to use it as it was intended: as a source of rhythm. Wish I had the patience and skill to give that to all of my tracks, but I digress.
This song is about me. Hence the title. But not really, it's about my partner and how crazy she makes me feel (complimentary).
I think I'm going to be really stretching the liner notes with the description, because my goal with making some of these love songs is to simply be "Vibes-Based". Ergo, unless a song is specifically about a moment, I'm going to be hard-pressed to actually explain it besides "It's a love song where I put some syllables together". I'll do my best.
#NoAI This track was once again made with a mix of Mixcraft MIDI and my Yamaha, alongside the old ukulele I have kicking around. I also used a drumloop from the Mixcraft library, and while I've had certain negative feelings about doing that in the past, I figured if it makes the song better, I don't have to feel so puritanical.
Lyrics
Verse 1: I feel Talk is never cheaper Than the money that you put Where your mouth is.
I got a Cruel twist of the phrase, You got a Cool turn of the name.
Slow down, Walking the streets Thinking nothing could Beat me down, lover.
Watch the world pass by, With one hand in a pocket And a secret in the other.
Oh hey! You oughtta know You never close those Curtains altogether.
You gotta Let the light shine through To the corners Of the motel room.
Lay down, Somebody told me That you don't get Lighter than a feather.
But I Bet they didn't know you, You got me floating on up Like a junebug.
Chorus: I'll tell you what it means,
When you got my Head up in the clouds again, You'll be all the Everything I need.
Forgive my Scatterbrains.
Verse 2: Hey now, Writing it down, Say the quiet part loud For the stage,
So you Make a page for a moment And we Leave it for another day.
I felt like Nobody knew The write shape Of the notes to the melody.
It all sounded like static, Syllables stacked to the attic, Autopilot in automatic.
I promise, Wherever we go, You'll be the first to know and the last to guess.
The second-best thing About you loving Nonsense Is that you love me.
Thick or thin, The words are in My own damn way, Times New Roman is the old days.
We talk through touch, And I know it ain't much But I'm a scatterbrain.
I'll tell you what it means,
When you got my Head up in the clouds again, You'll be all the Everything I need.
Forgive my Scatterbrains.

foot tapper. and the lyrics make for a nicely textured earworm. i was truly grooving by the end. and i love those chords you end it with, makes it feel like a breath of fresh air
I love this!!! The ukulele is perfect. The delivery on the second verse is so satisfying. And that synth in the bridge!!!! So good. Absolutely loving this pop sound vibe you're building!
I really like the flow you've got going on in the verses, every line fighting to get stuck in your mind. I don't think I quite registered the ukulele at first but I think this track wouldn't be the same without the texture it adds.
Another very interesting composition that becomes a bit of a surprising banger. With the right production these tracks could go far. Amazing lyrics, is there a reference to the Radiohead "Scatterbain" song here?
It's a happy semi-accident, for sure. I had a bunch of names (like Airhead, for example) and Scatterbrains sounded the least insulting to myself, lol.
I knew the Radiohead of it all would stick around and here we are! I added an "s" to feel like less of a fraud 😀
Thank you for your kind words, by the way. I appreciate it
Oh, man, I SUPER-dig this. The rhythm of the lyric is really satisfying, as is the slangy-syntax. The chorus is a nice moment, singable, and I like how it lifts.
