Corruption of epic proportions

Liner Notes
#folk #political #topical #protest There are a few songs I'm working on to start this songwriting challenge, and of course no shortage of things to write about these days. This one made it out of the gate first, probably because it was fairly simple production wise and straightforward lyrically. I took inspiration (and some of the numbers) from a recent NY Times article about this subject- and while there are more dramatic (and maybe more important) things happening as well, this is a subject that isn't discussed enough, if you ask me.
Played my Taylor acoustic first, then overdubbed the vocal (it was a little problematic to play it and sing all those lyrics after a long day! and I still slightly messed up the lyric about keeping the airplane, but you get the idea) . Stay tuned for more!
Lyrics
Corruption of epic proportions
ICE and Greenland and Epstein, you know some of that stuff But the corruption of epic proportions, not mentioned quite enough
28 million for Melania’s documentary Amazon paid Trump, for a film, no one wants to see
Another 90 million in settlements, shakedowns, in reality Paid by YouTube, Paramount, Meta and ABC
Qatar gifted Trump a jet worth 400 mill Trump will keep it when he leaves, if he even will (if he ever will)
One point four billion total, an abuse of public trust A betrayal of all that’s sacred, becoming toxic lust When there’s a full accounting of all these crimes Historians will wonder how we lived thru these times
Another 800 million, to Trump and family Paid for all their grifting thru cryptocurrency
23 million more from licensing Trump’s name overseas in dubious schemes, its one long con game
secret service pays for rooms in Trump hotels one more way to profit from government personnel (personnel)
One point four billion total, an abuse of public trust A betrayal of all that’s sacred, becoming toxic lust When there’s a full accounting of all these crimes Historians will wonder how we lived thru these times
I’d say its slimy business , but that gives a bad name to slime

Good stuff - the politics is bang on the money (apologies for pun) but there's that leavening of humour
This lyric is full of personality whilst being informative - the framing of the verses with the money adding up, and then the 1.4 billion line to start the chorus is just great writing with the nod to accounting. I also like how you move between the specifics in the verse before bringing a human touch in the chorus
Knew I could count on you for some good political commentary. “Gives a bad name to slime”:is brilliant.
Truth, really well put. Clever lyrics, well delivered. Great last line.
The grift is real. It’s incredible how much of this madness comes back to shameless self-enrichment. Nicely documented, and a great folk protest song!
A full accounting of crimes, indeed! Or at least one cut on what could be a triple album on the topic. We need more protest songs! Good to see you back for what should be a very interesting FAWM, given the daily deluge of depravity in our news feeds.
I love it. Keep on hammering out the truth.
I love that chorus chord progression, especially on the end of the lines. Very tasty. Good to see you kicking out the new tunes.
I absolutely love the punctuation of the ‘historians will wonder…’ line! 😁 fun tune!
Yeah, this needs to be sung to a room full of people. Often.
I just knew you'd have a great protest song! There is so much corruption! Good one!
on another relevant note..The 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy, based on J.D. Vance's memoir and directed by Ron Howard, had a reported production budget of $45 million. Netflix acquired the rights to the project for this amount after a competitive bidding situation, fully financing the film.
Those number are pretty scary! very nice delivery of your message, pleasant music, certainly more pleasant than the topic! well done - great line "Historians will wonder how we lived thru these times"
Hell yes, pull off the covers and reveal all this stuff! Reminds me a bit of early Bob Dylan, in terms of the focused and informed political passion. And I adore the last line.
Quite the reminder! All this is sometimes easy to foget because of all the rubbish they come out with. And many seem to be prepared to ignore the felony count. Sigh. I guess oe day they might all go away? We can but hope...
It truly is incredible...nice way to put it to music. The acoustic protest genre is a great way to compile this admin of grift. I am sure you'll get whatabouters, but it's hard to argue with facts and good music! Keep bangin' em out!
