The Ones Who Walked Before Us

Liner Notes

First thing this morning (Happy FAWM), I was reading the memorial thread on the forums, A space for those we’ve lost, https://fawm.org/forums/3614. This year I am missing Tom Jeffers aka @sexybass and @srcoops from our happy band of merry travellers. This one is for all who walked before us. And in this case, "One take is all it takes" is very much aspirational.

Lyrics

The Ones Who Walked Before Us

(c)Feb 1 2026, Sean McGaughey FAWM 01

V1 The ones who walked Before Us Trod lonely paths and traversed the longest highways

They stood for common folk and spoke of better days together

Chorus Let's raise a glass, shed a tear For those no longer with us here Gather round, tune your strings We Raise our voices in chorus For the ones who walked be- fore us

V2 Their songs could make us laugh Then sloppy tears would follow in an instant. They knew which machines to use and which we all should rage against.

Chorus

Bridge They knew Every heartbeat as a song Each breath a harmony Neighbours all comprising a band Communally a symphony

Chorus

A pleasure to listen to. Thanks for creating this. A noble song. Couldn't help but smile at "They knew which machines to use and which we all should rage against." Cheers

Great job...love the words, so many loved ones lost and remembered and missed.

It's a subject that's been on my mind a lot lately, both for music people I've known and for those who influenced from a distance. The simplicity of the music is a good match for the message.

This is a beautiful tribute song and wonderful in its lyrics. The idea of the ones that walk before us is very apt for me right now.

I just got home from walking my dogs. There was a couple inches of snow last night, so we were following in the footprints and paths of the people who walked before us.

So, even though you're talking about people that we've lost, I was thinking about the people before us as people you don't see but they can still help you along your way.

This song really resonated with me and it's a lovely little track.

A beautiful song, for some people I never knew but wish I had known. We also had a tribute at the UK filk con this weekend.

OK, so you have the honor of being the first FAWMer to make me cry this season. I can hear this sung (and sung along) in a circle, easily.

Having just read through the forum thread on this subject, this is a lovely tribute, Sean! Tightly written and nice melody. Love the hook. Excellent start. Happy FAWM!

As soon as I hit play, it was just great to hear your voice. Fantastic tune, great start.

A suitable tribute to those who are no longer with us but helped us along the musical way. Nice start, Sean.

I love the rhythmic flow to this creation. Nicely done.

@kellyk

This is a nice tribute. And the funny thing is, I didn't even know that posting chords was a thing that you could do for lyrics on FAWM! I am obviously not as thoroughly versed in how things can be done as I should be! :)

Communally a symphony <3 This is such tremendous way to start!

Oh, and I love the last verse. Very poetic.

Thank you for this beautiful, honest tune. It's a great one-take. A lovely, reverent Tom Waits vibe here.

Oh my aching heart. I didn't even realize that Tom was a Fawmer. And of course we lost Creed (Tuneslayer) a few years back. And Leslie is still very fresh...

Lovely stuff, Sean. This is a beautiful tribute, particularly as the losses seem to hit harder with each passing year. My glass is duly raised.

The bridge is painful - the exact kind of pain I think we need to process when we grieve. The melody and delivery really sound like you're singing for all of us in the best way. Cheers, Sean.

You've made me cry yet again. Love the use of C and F, the oscillating fourths are so gentle. Your melody is also lovely. Those leaps full of longing and loss. Beautiful tribute.

Well written. I feel this. You captured feelings I think we all feel. Lovely tribute.
