Been A Little Dry / Still Waiting

Liner Notes
This was more an exercise in cultivating a vibe (and getting some practice in on the lap steel), but in casting about for lyrics, the dry feeling of the desert dovetailed with the abysmal lack of rain we've had in Portland this year. It's one of the worst years for mountain snow in the last half a century, and it's quite possible that there won't be any for the rest of the season. Some people are loving the sunshine but I'd feel a lot better if we got some rain.
Lyrics
been a little dry no rain in quite a while nothing else to do so i’ll keep waiting
they say the sun feels so good upon their skin i must be outside looking in i’m still waiting
they say you can’t be sad on a sunny day i’m looking at the mountains something’s not okay
the canaries in the coalmine you know they tried to warn ya it’s looking more like california every day i’m still waiting
cobalt blue’s a shame when it should be grey we knew the end was coming didn’t think it’d be today
it’s been a little dry but i’m trying not to fear i know the rains will soon be here i’ll keep waiting

The texture and landscape/soundscape is so vivid! Love it. The mixing really ads to this as well! My favorite rhyme here is probably “warn ya” with “California” on the canaries in the coalmine verse, which is also profound. Cool vocal harmonies! Great lap steel sound you’ve got here!
I think this is wonderful. I love how moody it is. Great imagery and probably because I’m from Texas, I can surely identify with the feeling of really wanting rain. :) But anyway, the lap steel is great. You’ve certainly captured that cool, western vibe. Sounds great!
Love the rhythm you lay down. Climate is so worrying these days that even sunny days can be a problem, what an compelling angle for the song. What a winter--too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet, and don't get me started about the wind! By the way, I thought from the title this would be about wishing Dry January would soon end
The lapsteel sounds wonderful. The music evokes the desert. This is a hypnotic ride. I feel like taking a drive through a desert highway!
Oh man, that lap steel rules. I feel ya on the no rain sentiment. We've had a little bit over here in Bend, but it's been SO dry. Worried about the summer and fire season, honestly. Excellent vocals and melodies as always. I like this a lot!
i love this one. nailed the unsettled mood with the syncopated bass line, the wistful vocals, and the lap steel caps it
Your voice on this is so raw and human. Beautiful all round.
Lap steel!!! One of my all-time favorite instruments! You play it beautifully, and I am loving the percussion along with your lyrics and vocals. Felt those ghostly background vocals deep in my soul!
Works for me! Great vibe all the way through. Hope your rain does come soon!
I loooooove this vibe and the soft delivery. Not ordinarilya liker of lap steel but here it is effective for me. The chord changes work great too. Hope that some rain drifts your way.
Totally fantabulous. The vibe is intoxicating and it's artfully crafted--lyrics, music, vocals, the whole shebang. You pulled off that "warn ya/California" rhyme incredibly gracefully and somehow removed even a whiff of cheddar. Brilliance. Going back for more.
Oh, Carley! This is so good in so many ways. Love the rhythmic feel you've created and your vocal is spot on. The lap steel is tastefully applied, too.
Sorry about the lack of precipitation. Lack of winter snow creates the danger of forest fires when things warm us. Hope that doesn't become reality!
I love the balance of hope and despair. And nice lap steel! I need to break mine out.
