Liner Notes
Especially on the first day of FAWM, it's hard to ignore the muse when you start reading a lyric and are instantly humming a tune. I had a lot of fun with this one, thank you again @stephenwordsmith for letting me take a crack at it.
Lyrics
1
The starfish Has little Conception Of politics
Despite How well suited It is To the role
With no brain Or a spine And a mouth In the middle
Too close In its use To another such hole
2
The starfish has given No thought To symbology
Wearing Each point Of the five Without shame
And reading no more In the lines On the surface
On who You might kill Or be killed In a name
3
The starfish Is 'armless When life Is abysmal
Problems Run deep And the outlook Is dim
It's all In their nature To grow from their errors
If things Go awry When they're out On a limb
4
For words can turn you inside-out And hold the world to fault When each and every syllable Drips full of bitter salt
5
Surrounded By suckers All breathless And flailing
Threats From all sides To their classes Diverse
The starfish Has little Conception Of politics
Life Is too short And the other way's worse

Jeez! This is a masterpiece of erudition and rendition...every word and note a total joy!
These lyrics are unbelievably clever. Shel Silverstein would be proud. I feel the line about words holding us to a fault. Beautiful tune!
Lovely! This has a real timeless quality to it. If I'd just heard it somewhere else, I wouldn't have been able to say whether it was written in the 50s or yesterday. As it's fawm, I know the answer.
Great music for great lyrics. The waltz time really works here, giving this an eerie, even unstable feeling.
There is such a late 60s/early 70s vibe to this. I swear my mother had an album with this on it when i was a bairn... It's gorgeous. Both the lyrical musings and the sweetness of the delivery 🤩
Holy star pants! If this isn’t the very definition of crisp, clear perfection, I don’t know what is!
Already commented what fine lyric this is! Carly is a perfect one to deliver it! @stephenwordsmith she always amazes by the speed in which she delivers a so seemingly easy beautiful performance
- I'm amazed you put this together so quickly
- The delivery tone (and pacing) is perfect - it's a wry, lamenting and educational song all at once, and your voice doesn't prejudice any mood over the other
- The synths are great, adding a layer of interest and capping off the very ambivalent song with a positive note
- You manage the bridge well, with the melodic vocal suiting the more broadly poetic words within
- I really shouldn't have started the third verse the same as the first two; the Anaphora works once and once only.
This is a GORGEOUS take on this lyric! Beautifully done!
This a combination of sweet presentation and biting sarcasm (the best kind). Great collab here.
I love the stark not-happy-not-sad delivery on this awesome lyric.
What a great arrangement. The melody (and especially the phrasing) is nearly perfect. The delivery is crazy good as well. And I couldn't help but notice the wonderfully wrought lyric. I think I'm gonna start calling people of a certain profession starfish from now on.
This is beautifully executed! A simply lovely voice and delivered with sincerity and originality! Truly wonderful! Thank you! @stephenwordsmith Very creative lyrics my friend!
Great! Those synths fit so nicely and give a little boost to song. Good work.
I like this, I wish I was a starfish now.
Hello Carley: This is terrific! The meter and rhythm really drew me in, and it is a melody that is going to stick with me for quite a while. The lyric is a wonderful analysis and analogy of a starfish, its structure and its life, and clever social commentary to boot! Your vocal is very nicely done. Nice work!
This rules, my favourite song I've heard on here so far this month
My son and me had a lot of fun with this during dinner. Stephen's clever lyrics, presented beautifully by Carley's voice and ukulele - a fantastic match!
