Another Boring Love Song

by @davidtaro

Liner Notes

Massive false start yesterday… technical gremlins all over the shop, nothing recorded, a very sad and frustrated David. And then I woke up this morning, the storm clouds cleared and everything was working and I still don’t know why (yes, I did try off/on yesterday too 😅).

It was especially annoying as I woke up early(ish) on Sunday morning, went downstairs and this song just fell out super quickly. It’s a #lovesong to my beautiful and generally pretty FAWM-tolerant wife, Eleni, albeit a slightly begrudging one. And also a bit of a #meta songwriting thing, which I realise I kicked off with last year as well (whoops).

Late to the party, but nice to be underway! (I'm going to try adding chords this year - let me know if it's annoying and I'll stop...)

Lyrics

I get up early-ish Pick up my guitar Wait for inspiration I could write anything Anything I want Just a simple observation

So why, no matter what I try and do Like a restless homing pigeon who (Wants to fly somewhere new) Why do I keep coming back to you

There’s so many things In this stupid world I just need to pick one It could be vacuuming Putting up a shelf Digging in the garden

Or maybe I should not be so mundane A shiny angel dancing in the rain (Who looks the same as…) And that just brings me back to you again

I wonder if someone’s ever written a song About macrobiotics or trigonometry There must be literally thousands of things So why can’t I think of anything other than you

I guess I cannot win So I admit defeat You’ve got me surrounded I’ll just have to write Another boring love song And hope nobody minds it

Because no matter what I try and do Like a lovesick homing pigeon who (Knows it to be true) I will always find my way to you

Lovely song to get you off the blocks. Marvellous production and musicianship as always, silky backing vocals and an unintuitive yet extremely effective chord/melody combo. Ironic that you're wondering where the muse has gone while writing a song like this one! Oh, and kudos to anyone who finds a way to fit macrobiotics and trigonometry seamlessly into their lyrics!

Those little backing vocals feel so damn good in my ear man. Stop it haha. Really enjoyed this mate.

[pic]

Man you can write a meandering melody with such fluency and also deliver it with such devotion. Great song with a really natural, effortless flow. Appreciate you mentioning trigonometry as it is my favourite metry.

super nice tribute to your lovely wife (but I think she deserves at least a box of chocolates tonight... since our partners are putting up with quite a lot this month. The song is nice and I love the humble tone of your voice mixed with the bitvio's harder guitar. Good job

Absolutely delightful. I love a song that interrogates itself and leaves room for the listener to supply the blindingly obvious answer, and this does so with such a beautiful down beat wit and charm you can't help but grin. I especially adore the placement of "who" at the end of the pigeon line and the patient knowingness of the BV lines. Oh and the killer chord for me is that Em9. It's a real mood. A bluesy funk that takes both the G and then that extra 9th on the Gm to escape from (albeit temporarily). Love it.

[pic]

Oh wow! Everything about this is just mesmerizing. Those chord changes, your vocals, the backing vocals, that guitar tone, the production and mix... the list goes on and on. You've made a fan out of me!

[pic]

McCartney's effort sounds a little flat and uninspired next to this one. You really have all the magic working here, including that goofball lyric

[pic]

So, the title is wrong as of a couple chords in. Nothing boring about this song! Love songs are the BEST. Also, thanks for inspiring indirectly a silly song of my own. Cheers!

[pic]

the most ridiculous title for a Taro song - was never going to be boring! What a lovely song, its the attention to every detail that is so amazing! well to me, i guess for some its just that its a darn good song. Your shift from light to dark and fast to slow is amazing.

[pic]

Gorgeous song, sincere, sweet, loving and memorable. Fantastic vocals and playing. Loving your lyrics and music. The title is "I Will always Find My Way to You".

[pic]

The man, the myth, the legend. This is perfect boring love song music, but this is not a boring love song. Which is kind of the point right? The bridge was my favorite part lol. Now i need to see if anyone has written songs about macrobiotics or trigonometry. Thanks for the smile 😁

@brisk

G->Gm9 eh? so nice. Those are some pretty verse chords, and a cracking melody to boot. Feels beautifully constructed musically. And the words are really well structured too, telling a story, developing a theme, all the good stuff. I can only conclude that this is a songwriter at the top of his game!

[pic]

Awesome stuff. Production top notch, great melody. The chord progressions are so interesting and clever. Love the slightly heavier bridge. A great start to Fawm 2026

[pic]

Wow, David, this production is top notch. I still have no clue how you create that excellent wide sound, where all instruments have a vast space. The melody is a total winner. All in for the borrowed chords. My fingers already hurt by imagining the chord shapes.. Great song!

[pic]

This is so well crafted, of course it is. A song within a song, made me laugh and sigh. The emotion in your voice sold it as a secret love song, hiding in plain sight. So good

[pic]

😆 < Me reading those lyrics set to that arrangement. Delightfully silly, so I certainly don't mind another love song. As always (pretty sure every comment of every FAWM) your voice is great and the way you use it is just incredible.

[pic]

dont let paul hear it or he will assemble a new line up for wings and run with it. i love your singing here, especialy when you go high in the second half of the verse. this is truly a musical tour de force i like the way the song reflects on itself, as when you list a few mundane activites and follow it with the feeling that you should not be so mundane, most of all, i like your feeling that there is no reason to write about anything except love songs for your wife.

[pic]

Thank you Bill! Yeah, it would make a weirdly fitting companion piece to Silly Love Songs. Also, on a totally unrelated note - I just used the phrase 'tour de force' in my comment on your Sonya collab... and then read the above. Great minds!

[pic]

Firstly David, thank you so much for the message you left me and secondly, 'Wonderful World' by Sam Cooke contains a reference to 'trigonometry' but thirdly and most importantly, can I congratulate you on a stunning opener for this year's FAWM! P.S. "Lovesick homing pigeon"? That's a line that really flies!

[pic]

Dang! Why didn't I remember about Wonderful World :D

[pic]

I hate most three-chord songs, so you've made me a very happy listener with your palette of eight chords. Naturally, you brought a good melody and performance to the chords, so, well done!

[pic]

So glad you sorted out your technical difficulties. And glad you’ve got your first song posted…and about that…Look at all those chords…Awesome! I found the bridge thoroughly entertaining. Makes me want to write a trigonometry song. You should have whispered that to me because the cat is now out of the bag. Love that first strummed chord in the intro. Super flow to the composition and a wonderful sentiment to the lyrics. You the champ!!!

[pic]

Love that I can reply to you straight from the comment (thanks FAWM elves)... anyways, I think you just agreed to do trigonometry-themed song. And I'm holding you to that. Cheers dude!

[pic]

Props for the chord notation. I improv so much of my stuff it would take me the rest of FAWM just to notate my first song 😆 - this is just such a sweet song, nobody will mind another love song, the trigonometry & macrobiotics lines are inspired

[pic]

This is unbelievably sweet and true, fantastic melody. I am now going write a song called Macrobiotics and Trigonometry and you will be receiving a well-earned co-write. Cheers!

[pic]

Sounds like the muses needed you to sit on this for a bit. Great writing (I would guess that @metalfoot has already written a song about trigonometry thought). I am amazed how you can use so many minor chords and make it sound triumphant. I will concur that the 9 chords slap.

[pic]

This has got a lot of Crowded House in it for me David which is obviously awesome! I also love that major to minor 9th in the verses - sounds gorgeous! Glad you beat those gremlins out so early

[pic]
@hjcutter

Gremlins. Thank you summing up my writers block thoughts when I can’t figure out what to say.

[pic]

Damn gremlins. This is so good that guitar sounds almost as incredible as your vocals. Those 9s sound so magical. Lovesick homing pigeon. Nice. You’re an amazing musical mind. You just always blow my stupid lil lizard brain.

[pic]
@sbs

Really love the chord changes. Might give them to my session players just to see what they will come up with. Usually totally different than what I intend. Vocals are so gorgeous as always! And then you kick it with that trigonometry outburst. Another winner - either I haven’t heard a David Taro recently enough or this is one of my favorites!! Love this!

@owl

Love the G to Gm9 change (it was so convenient to comment on that with the chords listed out!) A lyrically fresh take on a love song, it made me smile, especially that macrobiotics verse. Off to a great start!
